WILDLAND URBAN INTERFACE

WUI

The Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) is defined as an area where houses or structures meet or intermingle with wildland vegetation. Mammoth Lakes is located within the WUI, and due to its close proximity to flammable fuels, is at a high risk for wildfire. As opposed to a typical residential fire, WUI fires can result in numerous homes igniting in a very short time. The usual outcome is that a home either survives or is totally destroyed; very few structures incur only partial damage. The key to decreasing WUI losses is to reduce home ignitability through strategies such as creating defensible space around your home and property, and hardening your home.
