Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District
Special districts are local government agencies that provide essential services to millions of Californians. They are formed and governed by local residents to establish or enhance essential services and infrastructure in their communities. Each special district focuses on providing specific types of services, such as water, energy, fire protection, public safety, treatment of waste water, garbage removal, and much more. It is the focused service that allows for innovation and long-term planning to meet the community's needs.
In addition to the Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District, the fire districts listed below also provide fire protection services in Inyo and Mono counties.
The Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District originated in 1948 to serve residents and visitors in the Mammoth Lakes area. The District boundary encompasses approximately 24 square miles, of which only 4.6 square miles are located on non-federal land. Ninety percent of that 4.6 square miles contains over 7,500 residents and more than 1,500,000 square feet of commercial development. Additionally, the population in Mammoth Lakes can vary from 7,500 to over 40,000 during peak weekends and holiday periods.
For over 100 years, special districts have provided access to a multitude of services that enhance our communities. There are over 2,000 special districts in California.
As the most local form of government, special districts are directly accountable to their voters and taxpayers through: boards that are elected directly by the districts' voters, requirements to submit annual financial and compensation reports to the State Controller, and meeting requirements mandated by state laws pertaining to public meetings, bonded debt, record keeping and elections.
The California Special District Association (CSDA) is an organization that supports and advocates for special districts by providing them with the resources necessary to best serve their communities. CSDA offers education and training, legal advice, legislative advocacy, capital improvement funding, and current information that is crucial to special district management and operational effectiveness.
